Even More Ways to Save on Gas, By Susan Matsumoto

Gas prices are going up again - ugh! I had previously written an article on Multiple Ways to Save Gas Money. I thought I covered it all but the fact is that there are actually so many ways to save money on gas that knowing it all is no easy task. There are also more ways of saving that are coming out all the time as we learn more about mechanical design and technology and as others develop more programs to help out.

So in follow-up to my previous report and in light of rising prices I am presenting even more ways to beat those rising gas prices:
  • Obey the law - Although it pains some of us to abide by the posted maximum speed limit, we all need to be aware that the speeds are actually arrived at through studies and analysis that are aimed at increasing safety for motorists and pedestrians alike. But when it comes to highway/freeway driving the speed limits were also arrived at with maximum fuel economy in mind. Believe it or not, by simply obeying the maximum speed limit you can increase fuel efficiency 7-14%.
  • Look at credit cards with rewards programs - Get a credit card that offers cash back rewards on gas. It is best to get a card that offers a general rewards program versus one that is tied to a specific gas station. The better offers showcase 5% cash back on gas purchases.
  • Consider store membership cards - It is common these days for grocery store chains to feature membership cards. These programs are primarily directed at rewards and discounts associated with grocery purchases but many now feature benefits tied to rewards at the gas pump. Your supermarket membership card can result in sizable gas discounts for doing what you need to do anyway - buy groceries. Some of the better programs can reward you with a discount of $1 per gallon and that is huge.
  • Choose the right payment method - In this day and age where plastic money dominates you may be surprised to learn that there are some vendors who still prefer cold hard cash, so much so that they will offer a discount to get it. Do your research ahead of time and locate these merchants.
  • Budgeting - Having the ability to pay for the transaction immediately is frequently rewarded and now convenience store chain Cumberland Farms offers users a payment system via a SmartPay card or SmartPay app that will help you save on gas. The payment application links directly to your checking account so it is like paying in cash. It provides you with a discount of 5-10 cents per gallon.
  • Using mobile apps - Apps like GasBuddy and Triple A TripTik help you to find the lowest gas prices in your area.
